Judaism in Medieval Iberia

"The Banishment of the Jews", by Roque Gameiro, in Quadros da História de Portugal ("Pictures of the History of Portugal", 1917).

Sephardic Jews- a diaspora Jewish population- was common in Medieval Spain & Portugal with the term Sephardic literally translating to "Spain" in Hebrew. During Medieval times, Sephardic Jews in al-Andalus enjoyed relative peace and prosperity, the freedom to practice their religion and receive educations (including women), and contribute to the scientific golden age taking place there. Throughout the events of the Reconquista however, Sephardic Jews endured increasing prejudice, abuse, and even mass killings due to their religious beliefs and practices.
